Plot

The film opens with Pavalakkodi (Nayanthara) in the hospital, and her father Vairakannu (Thambi Ramaiah) weeping for her misfortune. Later, the scene cuts to the present.

Pavalakkodi and Vairakannu live in a small house. Vairakannu is a single hardworking father who brought up Pavalakkodi, his only daughter. Pavalakkodi takes care of her father in his old age and doesn't wish to marry. They lead a happy life. Nearby in an apartment, three thieves, shown to be builders and street sellers, intrude and rob all the jewels, before raping and killing the housewife. To investigate this case, a police officer (Harish Uthaman) arrives at the site but finds no clues about the men, other than a Rajasthani blanket in the house. Upon asking, the house owner and maids say nothing, providing very little leads. The police officer uses the Rajasthani blanket to try track the criminals.

The story moves to Vairakannu, who wishes to go to the Kuladevi temple in town in order to try arrange a marriage for Pavalakkodi. They ask Vairakannu's sister for a car to go there, but her aunt refuses, and her husband tries to hit Vairakannu. Pavalakkodi angrily defends her father, berating her aunt for forgetting that it was Vairakannu's sacrifices and love for her that gave them their wealthy life. She challenges her aunt and uncle, promising to start up her own taxi business and surpass them in success.

Vairakannu and Pavalakkodi gather all their savings and go to buy a car. They arrive at a car store, where for one brief moment, Pavalakkodi's heart starts beating faster and she instinctively senses something unsettling, but chooses to ignore the feeling. After looking at many modern cars and models, Pavalakkodi is mysteriously attracted to a particular vintage car, not sensing the supernatural presence within it. Pavalakkodi decides to buy the car and takes it home.

That night, Pavalakkodi wakes up hearing strange noises coming from the car, but doesn't find anything strange. Mysterious incidents start to happen with the car, much to the ignorance of Pavalakkodi and Vairakannu (such as only functioning when Pavalakkodi touches the car, mysteriously stopping in a graveyard, and moving its vehicle parts on its own). Vairakannu returns home one day, worrying for his daughter's well-being when he's gone. Pavalakkodi, in a brief state of guilt and sympathy, ends up agreeing to marry someone, as long as that man would stay at their house and take care of her father. A marriage proposal soon after turns out to be from the family of the same police officer investigating the murder from earlier. Although the groom's parents like Pavalakkodi, the police officer refuses to marry her, too busy invested in his murder case. Pavalakkodi is left offended and furious. In the meantime, the three murderers attack another victim, strangling him on an abandoned road to steal his briefcase of money.

Later, Pavalakkodi gets an order for a Tirupati trip for 20 days. This time, she hires a driver to replace her father. As the driver takes the clients on the trip, he starts to lose control of the car, which starts driving on its own. It ends up following a man on a bicycle, who turns out to be one of the three criminals behind the two murders. It feverishly chases the unassuming man, horrifying the driver and the clients, who end up escaping when the car loses sight of the criminal and finally stops. The terror-stricken driver calls Pavalakkodi to pick up the car, warning her about the car's paranormal abilities. The confused Pavalakkodi goes out in the night to drive the car back, only to face the same thing when the car sees the cycling criminal again. Horrified, Pavalakkodi ends up being strapped to the seat against her will, helplessly watching as the car chases the criminal, who finally takes notice and tries to escape. But the car catches the man in under an isolated tunnel, and as it gruesomely mauls the criminal, its shadow on the wall takes the form of a giant dog. Pavalakkodi escapes the crime scene, only for the car to follow her and park itself back in her backyard.

Pavalakkodi and Vairakannu go visit a priestess at the Kuladevi temple, who tells them that the car is possessed by the spirit of a dog, who for some reason is connected to Pavalakkodi and will not leave until it completes its goal. The priestess gives the duo a blessed coin, telling them to attach it to the car, and that way the spirit would definitely leave when it completes its mission. Later, the tired Pavalakkodi begs the car to tell her its aims and why its here. The car ends up driving her to a villa, where she meets an ageing man, who seems to recognise her and the car. There, he narrates to her the story of the dog, Dora.

Dora was a stray dog, found as a puppy on the streets by the ageing man's orphaned granddaughter Aarthi, who loved Dora a lot. The two grew up together as best friends and as a family. One day, Dora, Aarthi, and her grandfather, were driving in their vintage car. Just then, they get stopped by the same three men responsible for the murders in the beginning of the film. After robbing them off their gold and jewels, they attack the grandfather and drag him and Dora out of the car, whilst one of the men grabs Aarthi and starts to sexually assault her. The other two hijack the car and drive away with young Aarthi, brutally raping her. Dora manages to chase after the car, but the men escape, leaving Aarthi in shock and injured. Aarthi gets taken to the hospital, but the assault on her was so severe and traumatic that it leaves her brain dead, with no hope of recovery. The grieving grandfather agrees to donate Aarthi's heart to another patient in need of an immediate heart transplant. The patient turns out to be Pavalakkodi, who had intercepted the three criminals when they were running away and suspicious of the men, grabs hold of one of them, only to get hammered in the chest and taken to the same hospital. Pavalakkodi and Vairakannu don't find out who the anonymous donor is, and the grandfather decides not to report the attack. Dora spends the rest of her days inside the car, eventually dying and causing her spirit to enter the vintage car. The grandfather sells the car, wanting to get rid of the memories. Dora's spirit believes that since Pavalakkodi has Aarthi's heart, the girl now lives on as Pavalakkodi. The spirit now has only one goal; to get revenge and kill the criminals responsible for Aarthi's death right in front Pavalakkodi.

Pavalakkodi, enraged by what happened to Aarthi, agrees to help Dora with her revenge. She remembers her heart speeding up at one point when she was going to buy the car, and deduces that it meant that one of the criminals had been near by back then. Using this information, she and Dora track down the other men, arranging a plan of revenge. Meanwhile, the first criminal's body is found by the same police officer assigned to the murder cases, who recognises the man and manages to track down the car, eventually suspecting Pavalakkodi as the culprit. But Pavalakkodi manages to evade the officer's leads and accusations, killing the second of the three criminals without getting caught. The last man, Mukesh Yadav (Sulile Kumar), finds out that Pavalakkodi is the one behind the murders of his friends, and kidnaps Vairakannu to use as bait. He lures Pavalakkodi to an empty construction site, forcing her to turn off the car and throw away the keys (meaning Dora can't do anything as her engine needs to be on) and then attacking her. He mocks her vulnerability and her claims that the car is haunted, taunting Pavalakkodi by breaking the windows and denting the car. Pavalakkodi attempts to hotwire the car using the blessed coin she had tucked into the car earlier on, but is stopped by Mukesh Yadav, who continues to attack her. The coin leaves Pavalakkodi's hand and miraculously enters the car's engine through divine intervention, starting the car and enabling Dora to attack Yadav before he could sexually assault Pavalakkodi. Yadav gets savagely killed by Dora, with Pavalakkodi watching on, finally getting justice for Aarthi and the other and hurt victims.

Plot

Thilak (Vijay Sethupathi) is a news anchor who works for Zen One TV, which is run by Kalyan (Akashdeep Saighal), a corrupt and unethical media baron who uses blatant sensationalism to gain TRP and is closely associated with Dheeran Maniarasu (Bose Venkat), a corrupt and powerful politician. Kalyan ensures that his channel does not report anything negatively about Dheeran and receives kickbacks in return. Also working for Zen One is Malar (Madonna Sebastian), Thilak's ex-girlfriend. Though Malar avoids Thilak initially, she soon realises her feelings for him, and they get back together.

One day, Malar gets the news that her friend Kalpana (Darshana Rajendran), who is a social activist, has been raped with the blame put on her boyfriend Abdul Kader (Vikranth). Thilak, creative head Ashok (Five Star Krishna), and Malar manage to smuggle out Kalpana from the hospital and convince her to tell her story. Kalpana had been raped by Dheeran's goons in retribution for protesting against Dheeran's pesticide factory, which had ruined a once-prosperous village due to the effluents coming out of the factory, and the blame was put on Abdul instead. This confession is telecasted live, and Kalpana gains massive support from the public. However, Kalyan telecasts another video which depicts Kalpana as "mentally ill" and had tried to malign Dheeran due to her "mental state". Enraged, Thilak attempts to expose Dheeran during a talk show, despite being bound by the Zen One management to ask questions framed by them to Dheeran. A brawl eventually ensues between Thilak and Dheeran, and Thilak brutally assaults Ashok, who is responsible for the video which had defamed Kalpana. Thilak then confronts Kalyan for his cronyism and lack of journalism ethics and is fired and blacklisted from all major media networks in response. Malar, executive producer Jagan (Jagan), and two other colleagues, Nisha and Aishwarya also walk out with Thilak in a show of solidarity, and they too are blacklisted.

With nowhere else to go, Thilak, Malar, Jagan, Nisha and Aishwarya take up jobs with Muthamizh TV, a struggling local news channel run by Mayilvaganan (T. Rajendar). Thilak goes to the village and reports on how the villagers are affected as a result of the pesticide factory and telecasts it on Muthamizh. He also makes Abdul and Kalpana reveal their side of the story and also gets that telecasted along with a video showing Dheeran assaulting him at the Zen One studio. With Zen One as well as Dheeran now exposed, Kalyan decides to take revenge on Thilak by orchestrating a bomb blast with the help of Dheeran at the district collector's office and putting the blame on Abdul, who was present at the Collector's Office minutes before the bomb exploded, thereby sensationalising it as a "terrorist attack". He also frames Thilak, Malar, and Muthamizh as co-conspirators, leading to Muthamizh being blacked out by the Central Government.

Undaunted, Thilak, who is on the run, manages to capture a video of Abdul revealing that he was not involved in any terrorist attack and was framed by Dheeran and Zen One. Thilak also records a video showing Ashok and the police orchestrating a fake encounter to kill Abdul. He manages to get both videos telecasted on Zen One itself with the help of Jagan, Aishwarya and Nisha, who have rejoined Zen One TV as part of Thilak's plan to expose Kalyan and Dheeran, as well as his former boss Pillai (Pandiarajan), the chief editor at Zen One who had suffered in silence against the atrocities committed by the Zen One management.

Having been exposed completely, Kalyan and Dheeran, who are at the Muthamizh studio, boldly admit their crimes to Thilak and defend themselves, but unfortunately for them, their confession is recorded by the Police Commissioner (Nassar), who was working incognito in Muthamizh. Kalyan and Dheeran are arrested. Thilak, Mayilvaganan, Malar, Jagan, Pillai, Nisha and Aishwarya celebrate their victory.

Plot

In 2029, no mutants have been born in 25 years, and an aging Logan suffers as his healing ability is failing. Working as a limo driver in El Paso, Texas, under his birth name James Howlett, he and mutant tracker Caliban care for 90-year-old Charles Xavier, Logan's mentor and founder of the X-Men, in an abandoned smelting plant in northern Mexico. Xavier has developed dementia that causes him to have destructive seizures; it is alluded that one year prior, one such seizure released a powerful wave of his telepathic powers that injured over six hundred people and killed seven people, including several of the X-Men.

Logan reluctantly agrees to escort Gabriela Lopez, a former nurse for biotechnology corporation Alkali-Transigen, and a young girl called Laura to Eden, a refuge "up north" across the border. Later finding Gabriela dead, Logan is confronted at his Mexican hideout by her killer Donald Pierce, who is Transigen's cyborg chief of security. Pierce is looking for Laura, who has stowed away in Logan's limo and has powers similar to his. She, Logan, and Xavier escape Pierce and his Reavers, but Caliban is tortured into tracking Laura.

A video on Gabriela's cellphone shows that Transigen created Laura and other children from mutant DNA to become weapons; Laura was created from Logan's DNA. As they proved difficult to control and Transigen found an alternative, the children were to be killed, but Gabriela and other nurses helped some escape. In Oklahoma City, Logan discovers that Eden appears in Laura's X-Men comic and tells her it is fictional. The Reavers arrive, but Xavier has a seizure and incapacitates everyone except Logan and Laura, who kill the attackers and inject Xavier with his medication. As they flee, Dr. Zander Rice (the head of Transigen) arrives to help Pierce.

Logan, Laura, and Xavier help farmer Will Munson and his family after a traffic incident, accepting an offer of dinner at their home, where Logan drives off enforcers from a corporate farm. Rice unleashes X-24, a clone of Logan in his prime and his alternative to the child program, who murders Will's family and Xavier, stabbing Will and capturing Laura. He also kills the enforcers, who mistake him as Logan and try to kill him. Caliban sets off grenades, killing himself and several Reavers while injuring Pierce. Logan is outmatched by X-24, but Will pins X-24 with his truck and shoots him three times with a shotgun before dying from his injuries. Logan and Laura escape with Xavier's body.

After burying Xavier, Logan passes out. Laura takes him to a doctor and persuades him to prove that the site in North Dakota is not Eden. There, they find Rictor and other Transigen children preparing to cross into Canada. Laura finds an adamantium bullet that Logan has kept since his escape from the Weapon X facility, which he once considered using to commit suicide. Logan decides that his job is done and chooses not to accompany them, to Laura's dismay.

When the Reavers ambush the children, Logan takes an overdose of a serum given to him by Rictor that temporarily enhances his healing abilities and boosts his strength. With Laura's help, he slaughters most of the Reavers before the serum wears off. As Pierce holds Rictor at gunpoint Rice tells Logan, who killed Rice's father years ago at the Weapon X facility, that no new mutants have been born due to genetically engineered crops created by Transigen and distributed through the world's food supply. Logan, having found a gun, shoots Rice and injures Pierce. X-24, enraged by Rice's death, fights Logan as the children combine their powers to kill Pierce and the remaining Reavers. Rictor uses his powers to flip a truck onto X-24, but he frees himself and impales Logan on a large tree branch. Laura uses Logan's revolver and the adamantium bullet to shoot X-24 in the head.

Near death, Logan tells Laura not to become the weapon that she was made to be, and after she tearfully acknowledges him as her father, he dies peacefully in her arms. Laura and the children bury Logan, and Laura turns his grave marker on its side to create an X, honoring him as the last of the X-Men before she and the children depart for the Canadian border.

Cast

  • Hugh Jackman as Logan:
The X-Man formerly known as the Wolverine and a physically-enhanced mutant with accelerated healing, as well as Charles Xavier's former pupil and Laura's biological father, dealing with his age and ailment.[24][25] He is one of Charles Xavier's caregivers, alongside Caliban.[26] Mangold spoke of Logan's age influencing his regenerative capabilities, which he stated may no longer produce soft skin, "so we imagined he heals quickly, still, but it leaves a scar. The simple idea was that his body would start to get a little more ravaged with a kind of tattooing of past battles, lacerations that remain of previous conflicts."[27][28] On the second page of the screenplay, Mangold spoke of Logan as "... he's older now and it's clear his abilities aren't what they once were. He's fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain—hence booze as a painkiller."[29][30] In 2015, Jackman requested fan input for the direction Wolverine's story should go in the next film, while seeming to confirm that the project would serve as his farewell to Logan.[31] To prepare for his role, Jackman ate a minimum of six meals per day, when working with trainer Mike Ryan.[32] Ryan stated that an average workout session for Jackman lasts up to three hours, beginning at 4:00 a.m.[33] Jackman stated, "... it's going to be very different. Very different in tone and hopefully different to anything we've done."[34] Regarding the more personal tone Jackman noted "That's always been really his dilemma, coming to terms with who he is".[35] Jackman has also explained that comedian Jerry Seinfeld was indirectly responsible for his decision to stop playing Logan after 17 years, with Jackman stating, "I was having a chat with [Seinfeld] about a year ago ... he was talking about why he finished Seinfeld ... He said he'd always had this feeling and belief that you never know when either your energy or the audience's energy is going to dip over into people [saying] 'Oh, please go.'"[36] Jackman accepted a pay reduction to ensure that the film would be produced to receive an R-rating.[37]
    • Jackman also plays X-24, a feral younger clone of Wolverine, loyal only to his creator Zander Rice.
  • Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier:
A mutant who is the world's most powerful telepath, who is also founder and former leader of the now-defunct X-Men. He was formerly known as Professor X.[38][39] Charles's telepathic abilities have become unstable due to age (over 90 years) and an unknown brain disease, and at times he does not even recognize Logan.[26] During the events of Logan, Xavier is cared for by Logan and Caliban.[40] Regarding Xavier and the themes of aging and loneliness, Mangold said,[41] "We've seen these characters in action, saving the universe. But what happens when you're in retirement and that career is over? ...[42] The really interesting thing to me, or a place to dig that hadn't been dug, was the idea of mutants when they're no longer useful to the world, or even sure if they can do what they used to do. Their powers are diminished like all of ours are by age ...[25] Our Charles is a very sweet character in this film. I think he's always been an incredibly sweet character. With the addition of his own physical fragility in this movie, he becomes an incredibly powerful paternal figure in the movie. Logan is more of a reluctant one, I think you can easily guess."[43] Stewart remarked that "... this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it's the end, it's over."[44]
  • Richard E. Grant as Dr. Zander Rice:
The surgical head of Transigen,[45] whose father was killed by Logan during his escape from Weapon X Headquarters at Alkali Lake.[46] On the character of Rice, Mangold stated, "He's the puppet master behind Pierce and the Reavers, and has a much larger role in the sense that he's actually the kind of brilliant mind that is trying to grow mutants."[43]
  • Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce:
Transigen's relentless, calculating, and intense head of security and leader of the militant Reavers,[43][45][47][48] who is sent to retrieve Laura, which brings him into conflict with Wolverine. Holbrook said of the character, "He's an innovative engineer and he's a big fan of Wolverine. He just wants to hang out with him ... There's a lot of surprising stuff in it."[49] Mangold praised Holbrook's performance, saying that "[he] is just a fabulous actor. I wanted this film to feel intimate and real and truthfully acted, and I wanted very much to break away from the kind of bloated feeling I've gotten from a lot of comic-book movies."[43]
  • Stephen Merchant as Caliban:
An albino mutant who can sense and track other mutants, who is helping Logan take care of Xavier.[26] On Merchant taking the role, Mangold mentioned, "I'm always interested to find the thing that looks most interesting on the actors. Stephen is a huge man. One of the things that is so wonderful filming with him for a character like this is that he's a good six inches taller than Logan, and huge over Patrick. The little kid in the movie would come up to basically his knee. So there's a wonderful sense of scale—but he has heart too." Mangold concluded by stating, "... So that was a wonderful energy to enter the movie, and someone who instead of turning things into their own energy kind of joined ours."[25] A younger Caliban was previously portrayed by Tómas Lemarquis in X-Men: Apocalypse.[50]
  • Dafne Keen as Laura:
A mysterious young girl, who is "very much" like Logan as well as Logan’s biological daughter. She is also subject "X-23".[25][45] On Keen's portrayal of Laura, Mangold mentioned, "If anyone could steal a movie from [Jackman], it would be Dafne. She carries, all the time, a slight strangeness."[51] In an interview with Digital Spy, Mangold stated, "... [Keen] was 11 years old when we were shooting. She's a remarkable kid. Her parents are actors, and she's kind of a very modern kid. Very physically capable. Incredibly gifted as an actress. I mean, it was a huge risk for Fox to allow me to make a movie where the third point of the triangle was built upon someone so young." Mangold stated that the worldwide search for an actress to portray Laura was one in which he was seeking "someone who was bilingual because I wanted a Latina kid—one who was between 10 and 12, and was a credible child." He later stated of Laura that: "She's an 11-year-old girl equipped with all the volatility, instability, mood swings, shadows and potential violence of our hero."[43] Co-writer Scott Frank pushed for the character to speak as little as possible when he joined the project to avoid making her into a typical kid sidekick, explaining, "I read a few other drafts of the script that Jim worked on, and in all those drafts she was talking from the beginning and had an attitude. I thought that was a giant mistake."[52] Sienna Novikov served as Keen's stunt double.[53][54]

Additionally, Eriq La SalleElise Neal, and Elizabeth Rodriguez appear as Will Munson, Kathryn Munson, and Gabriela Lopez.[55][56][57] Doris Morgado, David Kallaway, Han Soto, Jason GenaoKrzysztof Soszynski, and Alison Fernandez appear as Maria, Danny Rhodes, Valet, Rictor, Mohawk, and Delilah, respectively.[57][58][59][60] In the commentary to X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer had stated that his film's post-credits scene would directly connect with the on-screen debut of X-Men antagonist Mister Sinister in Logan.[61][62][63][64][65] In January 2017, Mangold stated that the character would not appear in this film. However, the DNA from several mutants, including Logan, in that film was used to create the clones that are seen in this film.[66]
